Cleveland Museum of Art to Auction Sculptures at Christie's

500 Years: Decorative Arts Europe sale to take place November 22 in New York

CLEVELAND (October 27, 2011) – As part of the ongoing review of its collections, the Cleveland Museum of Art has identified 22 European sculptures for deaccessioning through auction. In keeping with the museum's practice and the generally accepted guidelines established by the field, proceeds from the sales of these works will be directed to the acquisitions fund, to support future acquisitions.

These works will be included in Christie's upcoming "Gilded Age" auction, part of the 500 Years: Decorative Arts Europe sale, on November 22 in New York, along with sculptures and other objects from about a dozen other American museums.

Objects from the Cleveland Museum of Art include:

A Warrior (copy after the Borghese Gladiator). Bronze; 153.60 cm. Bequest of John L. Severance 1942.793

Dancer with Castanets, 19th century. France, manner of Etienne Maurice Falconet (1716-1791). Marble; 42.60 x 16.00 x 16.00 cm. The Elisabeth Severance Prentiss Collection 1944.128

Sextus Tarquinius Threatening Lucretia, 1800s. France, cast after a model by Hubert Gerhard (Dutch, c. 1540-50-before 1621). Bronze (hollow cast), dark brown lacquer patina; 52.70 x 34.30 x 39.40 cm. Purchase from
the J. H. Wade Fund 1962.245

Hercules, c. 1750. Italy. Gilt bronze; 22.30 x 8.70 x8.60 cm. Bequest of Mrs. Severance A. Millikin 1989.156
